Four generations on: from the rice of the Mondego to boutique hospitality
Oryza, the botanical name for rice, is far more than a name: it is a tribute to our family roots and to the legacy of those who gave their whole lives to the land.

The beginning of a legacy
Our story begins in the fertile fields of the historic Quinta dos Torreões, where the family's great-grandfather stood out as one of the largest rice growers in the region.

Work in the fields
Those were times of remarkable collective effort: the farm work and the weeding of the paddies could bring in hundreds of workers from the surrounding villages, leaving a deep mark on the riverside community.

When the family story opened its doors to the world
More than a century later, the house was restored and turned into a boutique guest house by two brothers, great-grandsons of José Adelino da Silva, who wanted to preserve the family legacy and the identity of the place.
The restoration respected what time had kept: the original layout, the woodwork, the tiled façade and the character of the house.
Although the family home that now welcomes guests from all over the world does not stand on the old farmland of Quinta dos Torreões, it carries that history and that heritage with it: the carefully preserved family archive of old photographs, documents, account books, correspondence and other historical records lets us revisit an era when rice shaped daily life in the Lower Mondego.

Our vision
In the hands of the fourth generation, and now looking towards the farm as well, Oryza rests on one non-negotiable commitment: to preserve, to value and to share a family legacy built over more than a century. Because we believe that the projects that truly matter are the ones that cross generations, keeping alive the stories that define us and inspiring those who come after us.
‘Harvests belong to their own time; memories belong to every generation.’
